Northumbrian Wildlife Tours is Alan Tilmouth’s fifth child.
I’ve had a
passion for nature and birds ever since childhood, I suspect spending weekends in the valleys of the Cheviots and some of Northumberland’s great beaches rubbed off on me. Later, as a wandering teenager, exploring the semi-industrial coastal landscapes around South East Northumberland just reinforced my love of outdoors.
I worked in business management for 25 years for one of the UK’s largest clothing manufacturers and then with my own small retail business in Alnmouth. Having sold that business in 2009 and having pre-school twins as well as an eight-year old at school I now work freelance in many different nature related areas.
As a freelance writer I have delivered projects such as the English Language version of the Birding Sevilla website; had several articles published in the BAFTA award winning Birdguides webzine on varied subjects from rare birds, identification guides to conservation stories and the occasional piece in Bird Watching magazine. Also I consider it a priviledge to blog once per month at the superb 10 000 Birds.
I work part-time as part of the Birdguides News Team successfully delivering rare & scarce bird news 365 days per year across Britain, Ireland & The Channel Isles.
In January 2011 I launched Northumbrian Wildlife Tours offering guided wildlife & birdwatching walks in North East England and I am continuing to develop this offer to add new and innovative ideas and locations to the guided birdwatching niche locally.
I am currently Honorary Secretary of Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club and have co-authored their annual report on three occasions (2001, 2002 & 2009). I also manage the NTBC Sightings page on the club’s behalf.
In my spare time when not running around after the kids I go birding and occasionally catch moths. I’m happy.
